HOW DO I COPE ?
Have you ever come across a child who is aggressive, always fights his/her friends, hyperactive, and prefers to be alone most of the time? Have you ever wondered what could be the problem and how could they be helped out? Did you know this could be BESD?
Behavioral, Emotional, and Social Difficulties (BESD) are a type of special educational needs in which children/young people have severe difficulties in managing their emotions and behavior. They often show inappropriate responses and feelings to situations.
This means that they have trouble in building and maintaining relationships with peers and adults and in most cases, they also struggle to engage with learning and to cope in mainstream education.
Children with the most serious emotional disturbances may exhibit distorted thinking, excessive anxiety, and abnormal mood swings.
Many children who do not have emotional disturbance may display some of these same behaviors at various times during their development. However, when children have an emotional disturbance, these behaviors continue over long periods of time. Their behavior signals that they are not coping with their environment or peers
Children with BESD will often feel anxious, scared, and misunderstood.
Typical characteristics of children with BESD includes:-
· Disruptive, antisocial, and uncooperative behavior
· Temper tantrums
· Frustration, anger, and verbal and physical threats/aggression
· Withdrawn and depressed attitudes
· Anxiety and self-harm
· Stealing
· Truancy
· Vandalism
· Drug abuse
·
Though Parents are still vital in the healthy development of their children. Some aspects of parenting or the home environment can contribute to emotional and behavioral disorders. These include:
- Significant, chronic stress in the home
- Lack of structure
- Authoritarian parenting style with rigid, excessive rules and punishments
- Permissive parenting with few if any expectations, limits, or establishment of acceptable behaviors
- Inconsistent expectations and discipline
- Disinterested, distant parents
- Abuse
- Violence and general dysfunction in the home
- More negative than positive interactions in the home
· Creating and maintaining a healthy, positive, loving environment is healthy for everyone in the home. Most communities have parenting programs to help parents and kids
Recent figures estimate that around 150,000 children in mainstream and special schools are suffering from BESD.
- BESD does not have to be a lifelong condition. With appropriate support children and young people can move forward and live successful lives.
Causes
No one knows the actual cause or causes of emotional disturbance, although several factors like heredity, brain disorder, diet, stress, and family functioning have been suggested and vigorously researched
According to NAMI, mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income. Further: Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are treatable. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan.
